SCHOOL CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Montessori believed the first six years of life mark a time of tremendous physical and psychological growth, exploration, and development. Also, human are capable of learning more at this stage than at any other. This was the period Montessori described as the time of absorbent mind, when young children are capable of absorbing huge amounts of information about the environment through their senses.
MDP Montessori School aim to provide stimulated environment that enables children to explore more during their sensitive periods. Our Montessori prepared environment is designed to give children space and time where they can concentrate, find and replace things easily, and make positive activity choices.
THE PREPARED ENVIRONMENT:
1. Practical Life
Practical Life is the true heart of a Montessori classroom. By working on real-life tasks, children develop their independence, coordination of movement, concentration and sense of order, through a variety of activities that explore daily activities such as eating, washing, dressing, and cleaning. The activities help children develop healthy work habits, a strong character and attitude towards social relationships, and a love and respect for the environment.
2. Sensorial Learning
A child discovers through their senses. Sensorial Materials are designed to sharpen senses and enable deeper understanding of sensations. They help children become aware of details through, first, strongly contrasted sensations (red vs blue), and then, through variously graded sensations (various shades of blue). Materials isolate a single quality: color, weight, shape, texture, size, sound, smell, etc., for children to train their focus.
3. Language
The Montessori 3-6 classroom is a natural extension of the patterns of communication that have already been absorbed. Through every conversation, every book read aloud, every new word that is taught, the student is learning language, and thus, learning to read and emphasis is placed on the process of acquiring language. In the Montessori 3-6 Language curriculum, writing itself is seen as a direct preparation for reading.
4. Mathematics
Learning mathematical concepts in a Montessori classroom begins concretely and progresses towards the abstract. They are developed from simple to complex. Process is taught first and facts come later. The
child using these materials experiences order, coordination, concentration, and independence.
5. Culture
Cultural activities lead the child to experience music, stories, artwork and items from the child’s community, society and cultural background. The areas of geography, history, science, zoology and botany are all included in this area. A range of globes, puzzle maps and folders containing pictures from different countries all help to give the child an insight into different cultures. Whilst learning to freely express themselves. Through cultural activities, children develop an awareness and appreciation of the world around them.
6. Arts and Creativity
Through art experiences and creative works, children can learn express themselves, their feelings, their experiences, and their ideas.
